Bull Moose pretty much came up with basic outline of the new deal a decade and a half before the depression.

Its influence on the American left and trade union movement(along with the SPA of course) cannot be over stated.

The Democratic Party pretty much stole their platform which of course was a great thing in hindsight. Hopefully the old lesson will catch on again.

At the moment however a significant third party disruption from the left would ensure a Republican win next November, which would be a fucking disaster for President Obama’s legacy.

There is more to politics than strategic voting. There is also the national discourse. Democrat politicians had pretty much surrendered the narrative to the far-right in recent years, to the point of distancing themselves from Obama in the ‘14 mid-terms. A fat lot of good that did for them, because while teabaggers’ ideas suck, they’ve at least taken that battle seriously. Granted that marriage equality and income inequality have since managed to make in-roads in the national discourse. But I’m not yet convinced that democrats understand politics is a battle of ideas, not just cold-calculated short-term strategy.

Nor am I yet convinced voting Bull Moose is a good idea. But I am looking into it as an option, if Democrats screw the proverbial pooch again. If nothing else, it would deliver a less ambiguous protest message than simply not showing-up at the polls like many did last time.

Democrats have 15 months left to convince me that they’ve gotten their act together. But if they’re still so out-of-touch that they’ve failed to learn from ‘14 that the knuckle-dragging “Osbuma iz teh antycrist” crowd will not vote for them regardless, that will make my decision alot easier.

FTR, I voted in the ‘14 mid-terms. But I was sorely tempted to stay home.

Great White Snark,

The Bull Moose Party could easily become a reality, that is not the problem. The problem is them winning elections. It would be hard for them to garner enough resources to educate the public about their positions and to mount an effective campaign against the two dominate parties, especially after Citizens United.

Most likely, at best, they would only siphon votes from the democrats, thus increasing the chances of a republican Presidency in 2017.
